Is Hoarding A Problem?

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

A picture of a room full of clutter. Is Hoarding A Problem?

Hoarding--

It was a term which began with folks known to have their savings by them, probably hidden inside their flock-beds; in the contemporary day, hoarding in a living or work space is a pattern characterized by excessive acquisition of and/or an inability or unwillingness to discard large quantities of objects that cover the living areas of the home, or an office area.

You may have made a commitment to clear out and clean out.

It takes time.

Some conditions that may be present in a hoarding situation:

  • Beds that cannot be slept in;
  • Kitchens that cannot be used for food preparation;
  • Tables, chairs, or sofas that cannot be used for dining or sitting;
  • Unsanitary bathrooms; Tubs, showers, and sinks filled with items and can no longer be used for washing or bathing;
  • Their clutter and mess is at a point where it can cause illness, distress, and impairment.

Also, if pets are present, they may have caused significant damage to floors and carpeting because they have been having accidents inside.

We do rebuild--We are also capable of laying flooring, carpeting and much, much more.  We are here to help, and estimates are complimentary.

Fall Cleaning instead of Spring Cleaning

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

Fall is officially underway and that means leaves are falling and crisp weather. For some homeowners they luck out and their leaves blow away or be some else's problem, but for many they have to deal with the fall cleanup. While working on cleaning leaves out of the yard, you should not forget to pull the ladder out and clean the gutters to help drainage issues come spring.

When gutters fill with leaves they become impacted throughout the winter months due to snow and ice. Once the warmer weather comes around the homeowner can experience issues due to the gutters getting full. Rather than the water pushing away from the house, the water will flow over the edge and fall into the foundation. All of this can be prevented by cleaning out your gutters in the fall rather than waiting until the spring.

Different Problems, Different Solutions

12/23/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning Solvents Some of the various cleaning solvents that SERVPRO uses for the different jobs that we encounter.

Ever since I was a young man, I've always believed that any stain could be removed with enough elbow grease, water and soap. I never knew until recently how wrong I actually was. Sure, good old fashioned elbow grease contributes to getting out most major stains, however, what I didn't know is that stains and dirt are all different, therefore requiring different solutions in order to mitigate.

For example, some stains and dirt can be removed with dry solutions and dry sponges. These stains are hydrophobic meaning that water doesn't dissolve it and usually just makes it worse. Since this is the case, these stains are classified as lipophilic, meaning you would use some sort of solvent that is mainly fatty based in order to fully dissolve the stains and dirt. Stains can also be hydrophilic, where water and solvent will get the job done, and lipophobic, where the fatty based cleaner doesn't fully dissolve the dirt and stains.

That is why every job and every stain is different, requiring tailor made solutions in order to completely clean the area to its original sheen, like the disaster never happened.

Ultrasonic cleaning

10/25/2019 (Permalink)

What is ultrasonic cleaning? Ultra Sonic cleaning is a nonabrasive way of cleaning that involves submerging items in a liquid medium with a special solution that sound waves pass through to create millions or microscopic bubbles that lift away dirt, soot, smoke, and odor. This method is more effective and efficient than any other way.

Prevent pipes from freezing

Frozen Pipe Frozen Pipe Burst

Night time temps are beginning to drop. Soon it will be time to wake up a little earlier to get the frost off our windshields. While preventing winter from coming is not likely to happen, we can take precautions to prevent worse things from happening from the cold, like frozen pipes for example.

Frozen pipes bursting is not only a devastating damage that can happen to your home but can also be costly. there are some things you can do tho to help prevent this.

1) turn the heat on. If no one is going to be in the home you might want to turn the heat down to save on cost while away, but its probably a better idea to leave the heat on.

2) Allow faucets to drip. allowing the faucets to drip helps open up the pipe to help keep the risk of pressure build up and bursting down.

3) Keep cabinet/vanity/closet doors open if they contain pipes to allow heat to get in.

4) Seal up cracks and holes where pipes run into the wall and floors.

5) Add insulation to areas that tend to be colder such as attics or basements.

What is a Puffback?

1/9/2017 (Permalink)

A puffback can be described as an explosion or misfiring inside the furnace. This can cause soot to be sent throughout the whole inside of a home. Covering walls, floors, furniture, drapes, cabinets, and pretty much all the things inside the home. A puff back can require some thorough cleaning to be done by a restoration company such as us, SERVPRO! It may even cause additional repairs on your home heating system.

Depending on the strength of the puffback and to what extent of its effect it can have on the home or building, can vary on whether or not how good the quality of oil that is ignited. There are other variables that come in to play as well, such as heater type, condition, building/home construction, etc..
